In a distant future, twelve-year-old Dickie is anxious about his upcoming government intelligence test, desperate to prove his smarts. When his parents receive the results, they discover that Dickie has "passed"—but the grim reality is that the government eradicates anyone deemed too intelligent. Meanwhile, in 1985, a feverish Peter Wood begins communicating telepathically with Charity Paine, a girl his age from Puritan New England who is also unwell. Their connection brings them joy as they share thoughts, and Peter introduces Charity to experiences beyond her limited world. However, their bond takes a dark turn when Peter’s foresight puts Charity in danger, leading the villagers to suspect her of witchcraft after she unwittingly mentions the future.
