Wade arrives with Dan Gabriel, his former Vietnam commanding officer, now a covert ops and demolition specialist. Tension sparks between Dan and Grace, who instantly clash over their opposing views—he's a staunch conservative, while she vehemently opposes his beliefs. Dan effortlessly charms Jean and advises Libby on using psychological tactics to handle a bully who ruined her hair. Grace confronts Dan, demanding he stay away from her children, yet their heated exchange culminates in an unexpected kiss, leaving her conflicted with her attraction. Just as Dan jumps into a river for demolition work, he mysteriously disappears, leading everyone to believe he's dead. However, he later resurfaces at Grace's home, revealing his faked death to escape and promising to return.
