The university where MacLeod teaches acquires an ancient statue of the Hindu goddess Kali, putting it on display. Immortal Kamir, its long-lost creator, arrives with a fierce resolve to reclaim it and return it to India. Meanwhile, Deva Ennis, the half-Indian department chair who discovered the statue, is equally determined to hold onto it. MacLeod, who has a history with Kamir dating back to the Raj period of British rule in India, understands the significance of the situation, as Kamir is the last remaining member of the Thugee, a cult that once honored Kali by strangling her foes.
