In a luxurious New York penthouse, Tess hosts a lively society party for the charming Everett Clay, who is caught off guard when his elderly father, Benjamin, drops in unexpectedly. Benjamin, still at the helm of the family business, reprimands both Everett and his grandson for their extravagant lifestyles. The next morning, he shares a cautionary tale about the prodigal son, emphasizing the values of hard work and self-sufficiency. He presents Everett with a framed deerskin jacket adorned with buttons handcrafted by their great-grandfather, signaling a disinheritance. Frustrated and broke, Everett shatters the frame just as Tess arrives in her Cadillac, offering him a ride to Colorado, where friends have extended an invitation. They soon reach Central City, a once-thriving mining town, and stop at the historic Teller House saloon, where Everett's attention is drawn to a peculiar sight.
