While enjoying his "day off" in Richmond, Virginia, Andrew encounters his fellow Angel of Death, Adam, as he visits the Mason family, whom he has been watching over for generations. The Masons hold Andrew in such high regard that they even have a special chair dedicated to him. They stop by The Sign of the Dove, the family tavern managed by the cheerful Ben Mason, who is set to marry that very evening. As Andrew and Adam discuss their duties, Monica works to reach her assignment, Nicholas Freeman, a dedicated print shop owner facing fierce competition. Desperate to support his family, Nicholas is contemplating a dangerous plan to blow up his shop for the insurance money. During his conversation about the Masons, Andrew spots a dove perched on the windowsill, a sign from Ben.
