Sarah and James Berrington have faced numerous challenges in their quest to have a child, exhausting every option, including in-vitro fertilization, all to no avail. When their last pregnancy test yields a disappointing result, Sarah breaks down in tears, heartbroken. Meanwhile, on the other side of the globe, a Chinese woman walks down a dimly lit street, cradling a tiny bundle. She arrives at a building's gate, gently placing her baby there before walking away, her cries echoing in the falling snow. Back at the gate, Gloria holds the baby close, waiting for dawn. In New York, at the home they share with Lady Penelope Berrington, James and Sarah contemplate adoption. Aware that Penelope might not take the news well, they decide to meet with an adoption counselor.
