In the tranquil village of Martyr Warren, tensions rise as contentious New Age travellers arrive, leading to conflicts with local magistrate Hector Bridges. The police are aware of the brewing discord, but the situation escalates when Hector is discovered shot dead. It soon becomes clear that Hector was not well-liked, even by his own family. Among the travellers is a former British army officer who shares a complicated past with Hector from the Falklands War. As Barnaby and Troy investigate, they uncover another murder—the body of an elderly man at the travellers' campsite. Meanwhile, Barnaby struggles with a strict diet imposed by Joyce, affecting his ability to tackle the case.
