Episode Overview

Monica finds herself working alongside Earl Rowley, a gruff baseball coach whose dreams of a major league career were shattered by an injury from the Vietnam War. He drives his high school players, particularly star athlete Peter Enloe, who is still grieving the loss of his father. Earl isn't pleased to have a female assistant, but Monica's impressive qualifications in both history and baseball make her the only choice. Meanwhile, Tess takes a job at a sports bar owned by Peter's mother, Laura. Just days before an important game, Earl names Peter team captain, informing him that a college scout will be watching for a potential scholarship. However, Earl's authoritarian approach clashes with Monica's lesson about standing up to bullies, leading to a confrontation between Peter and Earl, resulting in a fight and Peter's suspension from the team.
