Episode Overview

In March 1987, a coroner in Cincinnati conducts an autopsy on John Powell, a patient who recently died at Drake Memorial Hospital after being in a coma from a motorcycle accident. The coroner is taken aback when he detects the unmistakable scent of burnt almonds while examining Powell’s stomach—an indication of cyanide poisoning. This leads him to classify Powell's death as a homicide. The investigation soon zeroes in on an orderly named Donald Harvey, dubbed the "Angel of Death" by his coworkers due to the number of fatalities during his shifts. Surprisingly, Harvey confesses to Powell's murder, claiming it was an act of mercy. Prosecutors charge him with murder but doubt they can prove prior killings. However, local news anchor Pat Minarcin starts looking deeper into the case. With help from whistle-blowers, he uncovers that Harvey is present during each patient’s death.
