Journeys in Japan (2010)
S09E23 Mt. Fuji: Climbing to the Sacred Realm
Episode Overview
Mt. Fuji stands as Japan's most iconic mountain and has long been a site of spiritual significance, with pilgrims journeying to its summit for centuries. This sacred landmark is recognized as a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site. Today, most climbers begin their trek from one of the 5th stations, which are accessible by car or bus, cutting down the time needed to reach the top. However, in the past, ascents took days, starting from sea level. In this episode of Journeys in Japan, Peter Skov follows the ancient pathway taken by ascetic monks and other pilgrims, ascending from the shores right up to Mt. Fuji's peak.
