S09E24 Kita-Akita: Deep Connections with Nature
Episode Overview
Kita-Akita City is nestled in the northern part of Akita Prefecture, characterized by its mountains and dense forests. The Akita Nairiku Line traverses this rugged landscape. In this episode of Journeys in Japan, Michael Keida explores two locations accessible via this train line. The Ani district has a rich history of matagi, or traditional hunters, who have their own unique language and customs that have been preserved over the years. Michael encounters a contemporary matagi and discovers their harmonious relationship with the forest and wildlife. Additionally, in the Takanosu district, he participates in an annual festival featuring enormous drums, which are played to invoke rain and plentiful harvests, immersing himself in the local community's deep bond with nature.
