First Australians (2008)
S01E06 A fair deal for a dark race
Episode Overview
Throughout the continent, the original Australians are subjected to 'protective legislation' that confines them to reserves while regulating their wages, where they can live, their marriage rights, and travel options. In 1933, Yorta Yorta man William Cooper establishes the Australian Aborigines League, dedicated to his lifelong pursuit of equality. His nephew, Doug Nichols, emerges as a political figure as well; a pastor in the Church of Christ, he advocates for those impacted by the Maralinga nuclear bomb tests during the 1950s.
