Unbeknownst to him, seasoned producers Harry Baxter and Art Healy see an opportunity for high ratings and decide to assist the former race car driver when they notice the audience rallying behind him. To ensure his success, they secretly wire Hardcastle's home and tailor the questions to what Mark practices. Though Hardcastle senses foul play, Mark refuses to believe the game is manipulated. The situation escalates when Diane Templeton, a crew member, dies mysteriously, prompting Mark to reconsider. Hardcastle uncovers that Diane had evidence of the show’s deceit, leading to her murder by host Bryce Benson. Fearing the consequences, Baxter and Healy confess everything to Hardcastle.
