On May 8, 1999, Dana Plato and her fiancé, Robert Menchaca, went to visit Menchaca's mother in Moore, Oklahoma, to celebrate Mother's Day. Feeling ill, Plato took Lortab for pain relief and Soma as a muscle relaxant before resting in their Winnebago. When Menchaca and his family checked on her later, they discovered that Plato had passed away. Initially thought to be an accidental overdose, her death was eventually classified as a suicide, largely due to her long-standing struggle with substance abuse.
