Kimble secures a job as a cut man for boxer Joe Smith, who shares his dream of becoming a doctor, revealing that he turned to boxing due to the barriers he faced as a Black man in medicine. Concerned about Joe's memory lapses, both Kimble and Joe's wife, Laura, worry about potential brain injuries from his boxing career. Concurrently, Detective Henry Stone goes undercover as a sports journalist to probe Joe's manager, Lou, for suspected connections to organized crime. When a disgruntled worker hints that Joe may be pressured to throw his upcoming match, Stone shifts his focus to Kimble.
