Mexico: One Plate at a Time (2003)
S05E03 Mysteries of the Deep
Episode Overview
Water is vital for life, especially in the Yucatan jungle, where rivers and lakes are scarce. Rick ventures deep beneath the limestone surface to reveal the underground rivers and cenotes scattered across the peninsula. The Mayans revered these natural wells as sacred sources of freshwater. Today, equipped with snorkeling gear, we can explore them up close. After soaking in the water, Rick’s craving for seafood leads him to deep-sea fish, and he teams up with a local fisherman to whip up delicious beachside ceviche. When fishing doesn’t pan out, Rick visits the Merida market to sample prepared seafood, including Shrimp a la Vinagreta. He wraps up his beach adventure with spiny lobster at Oscar y Lalo’s on the Riviera Maya before returning home to grill a mouthwatering Lobster with Smoky Garlic Mojo.
