In the winter of 1991, Wisconsin was shaken by the discovery of a young woman's lifeless body. She was found naked and brutally beaten, her fingertips removed to obscure her identity. After months of investigation, the police identified her as Doris McLeod, uncovering her troubled history. Having survived on the streets, she had fallen under the influence of a pimp. Just a month later, she vanished without a trace. It took the innocent words of a three-year-old boy to lead authorities to Doris and the truth about the Boy and the Monster. The episode's second half follows a young woman from South Portland, Maine, on a quest to find her missing mother. Despite reaching out to the police, they hit a dead end after interviewing Bill Bruns, her mother's husband, who claimed Pearl had abandoned her family for another man. Desperate for answers, Elaine Woodward sought help from the media. An investigator took up the case, and with a combination of scientific techniques and diligent work
