Episode Overview
Orphaned at a young age, Sue Trinder (Sally Hawkins) has grown up among thieves and con artists. Under the care of Mrs. Sucksby (Imelda Staunton), who believes Sue is too pure for such a life, she has been sheltered from the worst of it. However, when Mrs. Sucksby's acquaintance, Richard Rivers (Rupert Evans), proposes to pay Sue £3,000 to help him with a scheme, she cannot refuse. Rivers, posing as a gentleman, has charmed Maud Lilly (Elaine Cassidy), a young heiress in need of a new maid after her previous one leaves. He enlists Sue to take the position and assist in winning Maud’s affection, with plans to marry her and then confine her to an asylum to seize her fortune. As Sue arrives at Briar, Maud's opulent estate, she steps into a completely different world.
