Episode Overview
On March 2, 1933, in a secluded area along the northern Michigan lakeshore, 180 miles northeast of Chicago, the Chicago Syndicate is enhancing their liquor by bringing in expert brewers from Germany. These illegal immigrants have traveled 6,000 miles to start anew. As eight newcomers arrive, one of them, Bernd, glances at a sign that reads, "Welcome to Chippewa Landing, Michigan." Confused, he asks, "Chippewa? What does that mean? But this is America, right?" Max Kerner quickly tells him to keep moving.
