S01E03 Why Give People Rights? They Only Abuse Them
Episode Overview
Maggie encounters local teacher Brian Shields and his wife, who holds a strong anti-gun stance due to his experiences in Vietnam. After a confrontation with some duck hunters, Brian loses his temper and fires a gun in the street. Tom decides to let him go, provided he stays out of further trouble. While PJ dismisses Shields as unstable, Maggie senses there's more beneath the surface. The following day, Brian is found dead, and suspicion quickly falls on the hunters. However, when PJ questions the wife, she reveals that Brian took his own life due to terminal cancer, using the incident to draw attention to gun dangers. PJ remains skeptical, but the media supports the wife's narrative. Eventually, Maggie uncovers evidence suggesting the wife might be responsible for Brian's death, but by then, she's become a media favorite, making it impossible to pursue charges. Meanwhile, Roz has purchased a car for her mobile salon, neglecting her duties at the station.
