When Ms. Beadle injures her ankle, Caroline steps in as the temporary teacher. She focuses on supporting a struggling older student, Abel, with his reading skills. However, Mrs. Oleson arrives and pressures Abel to leave school. In response, Caroline resigns in frustration, but ultimately returns after persuading Abel to reconsider and re-enroll in school.
