Episode Overview

In 1880, Bat Masterson receives a desperate request from his old friend, Ben Thompson, who needs help rescuing his brother from the gallows. Ben's brother, Billy, has been implicated in a gunfight where he accidentally shot off a man's thumb and is now injured himself. Although Billy insists he acted in self-defense, a determined sheriff is keen to see him punished. Despite having no official authority and no longer being a lawman, Bat agrees to head to Nebraska to reason with the sheriff. After his straightforward approach fails, he devises a clever escape plan, which only succeeds with the timely assistance of Buffalo Bill. Years later, when Bat's editor hesitates to publish the story, Bat reflects on the complexities of seeking justice in the Old West.
