Episode Overview
Dwayne attempts to connect with Whitley, but she brushes him off, focusing instead on planning her dorm's dedication ceremony. Tensions arise when Kim and others protest the inclusion of "mammies"—historical black nursemaids—from the art exhibit. Whitley, along with Freddie and Mr. Gaines, argues for acknowledging these women's historical significance. Distressed by the display, Kim decides to withdraw from the ceremony and opens up to Mr. Gaines about a painful childhood experience. Whitley suggests that Lena delve into her heritage at the Gilbert Library, leading to the discovery that Whitley's ancestors owned slaves. This revelation leaves Whitley feeling guilty, but Mr. Gaines advises her to accept the past. Meanwhile, Kim, Freddie, Lena, and Gina collaborate on a performance art piece that explores the progression of African American history.
