Episode Overview
In 1916, Britain's military is in disarray, prompting groups of friends to enlist together in newly formed battalions called 'Pals.' Paddy Kennedy, a warehouse clerk from Manchester, enlists in the Manchester Pals Battalion with his buddies Henry, Andy, and Jim. They soon learn that their entire neighborhood has joined, including their factory foreman, now Sergeant Mitchell, and their friend Lizzie, who has taken on the role of a volunteer nurse. As they prepare for the massive Battle of the Somme, they face the daunting task of taking Trones Wood, a dense forest teeming with enemy fighters. Amidst the chaos, they deal with shelling, evade German capture, and meet the enigmatic Private William Hunt, whose fate becomes linked with Paddy's. Ultimately, Paddy's journey leads him to the heart-wrenching task of executing one of his friends. How will he navigate the harsh realities of being a soldier?
