S11E08 Rescuing a Mesolithic Foreshore - Goldcliff, Newport

Feb 22, 2004 Season 11 Episode 8 Documentary, Mystery

Episode Overview

As the tide pulls back from the Severn estuary, fascinating signs of Stone Age life emerge. Time Team embarks on a three-day quest to unearth these artifacts before they're lost to the sea. Their task involves digging through 15 cubic meters of thick silt, racing against the clock. The Mesolithic era remains largely enigmatic, as its inhabitants were nomadic hunter-gatherers without permanent dwellings. Among their discoveries are some of the tiniest artifacts they've encountered. Phil and Brigid are captivated by ancient footprints of both adults and children, preserved in the sand. Phil also uncovers a huge tooth from an aurochs, a long-extinct giant herbivore. They collaborate with Martin Bell from Reading University, Mesolithic experts Nick Barton and Robin Crompton, along with food specialist Jacqui Wilson, who prepares a Stone Age-inspired meal.
