Episode Overview
Despite growing up in a loving family, Joe has always felt a sense of loneliness and disconnection. As a child, he struggled to fit in with his peers and lacked the affection he craved from his father. At just eight years old, he stumbled upon "the choking game," where he would restrict his own airflow to experience a high, a coping mechanism he resorted to throughout his childhood. In high school, he turned to drugs and alcohol, eventually becoming addicted to heroin by the age of 18. Now living in a motel, he often resorts to theft to fund his addiction, facing multiple arrests for drug possession and theft. Although he has attempted treatment several times, he consistently relapses soon after.
