S03E04 Leith Hall
Episode Overview
In 1650, James Leith constructed the initial tower that would evolve into Leith Hall, which has since been expanded by subsequent Lairds, making it a stunning example of the ‘chateau’ architectural style in Scotland. The estate, covering 113 hectares, also features some of the country’s most beautiful gardens. Remarkably, the Hall has remained within the same family for generations. The Leith family held significant military ties, playing a crucial role during the Jacobite Rebellion of 1745-46, notably connected to Bonnie Prince Charlie. On the eve of the decisive Battle of Culloden, Laird Andrew Hays received a writing case from the Prince, now displayed in the museum, which also houses the only pardon granted to a Jacobite by the English after the battle. Reflecting its military heritage, the Hall was repurposed as an army hospital during World War I. Tragedy struck in 1939 with the deaths of the last two Lairds
