Esther Howard
Esther Howard (April 4, 1892 – March 8, 1965) was a notable American actress known for her versatile performances in both stage and film. Over her extensive career, which spanned 23 years, she appeared in 108 films, showcasing her talent in a variety of supporting roles that ranged from desperate spinsters to unscrupulous criminals.
Between 1940 and 1949, Howard became a prominent member of Preston Sturges' informal ensemble of character actors, featuring in seven of Sturges' films, where her unique flair added depth to the narratives. Beginning in 1937, she became a familiar face in short films produced by Columbia Pictures, often sharing the screen with comedian Andy Clyde, further solidifying her reputation in the industry.
Her final appearance came in 1952 in a Columbia comedy short titled Caught on the Bounce, where she portrayed the role of Joe Besser's aunt. Throughout her career, Esther Howard's ability to embody a diverse array of characters made her a cherished figure in American cinema, leaving a lasting impact on the film industry long after her passing.
