Throughout his career, Byrne has garnered numerous accolades, including a Golden Globe Award, and has received nominations for a Grammy Award, two Primetime Emmy Awards, and two Tony Awards. In 2018, he was honored with the Irish Film and Television Academy Lifetime Achievement Award and was recognized as the 17th greatest film actor in Ireland by The Irish Times in 2020. Notably, The Guardian highlighted him in 2009 as one of the finest actors who had never received an Academy Award nomination.

Byrne's journey in acting commenced at Dublin's Focus Theatre, leading him to the Royal Court Theatre in London in 1974. He made his screen debut in the Irish drama series The Riordans, followed by the spin-off Bracken.
