Margaret Dumont
Margaret Dumont might view it as unfortunate that her most recognized contributions are as the quintessential straight woman in seven films featuring the Marx Brothers, including many of their most celebrated works. Reportedly, she never quite grasped their humor, both on and off the screen, which is a significant factor in her comedic effectiveness. Aside from a minor appearance in a 1917 adaptation of a Dickens novel, Dumont devoted her early career to the theater and joined forces with the Marx Brothers in the late 1920s, starring in stage productions of The Cocoanuts (1929) and Animal Crackers (1930). Around the same time, she secured a contract with Paramount Pictures. Throughout her career, she portrayed similar roles alongside other prominent comedians such as W.C. Fields, Laurel & Hardy, and Jack Benny, while also taking on serious dramatic roles, which she cherished. However, few of these endeavors achieved significant recognition. Her legacy, however, is firmly established as Groucho Marx's comedic partner, solidifying her status among the legends of comedy. Dumont passed away shortly after reuniting with Groucho on the television program "The Hollywood Palace" in 1964.
