Hugh Milburn Stone (July 5, 1904 – June 12, 1980) was a prominent American actor, celebrated primarily for his portrayal of Dr. Galen Adams, known as "Doc," in the classic CBS Western series Gunsmoke.

Born in Burrton, Kansas, to Herbert Stone and Laura Belfield, Milburn graduated from Burrton High School, where he was involved in drama, basketball, and even sang in a barbershop quartet. His brother, Joe, contributed to Gunsmoke's legacy by writing scripts for three episodes.

Stone's acting career commenced in 1919 with a tent show in Kansas, leading him to vaudeville in the late 1920s. By 1930, he had formed the Stone and Strain song-and-dance duo. His Broadway credits included performances in Around the Corner (1936) and Jayhawker (1934). The 1930s saw him move to Los Angeles, where he began appearing in films, including the Monogram Pictures serial Tailspin Tommy.

In 1955, Milburn was cast as Doc Adams in the television adaptation of Gunsmoke, taking over from Howard McNear. He became a beloved fixture on the show, featuring in 604 episodes until 1975, save for a brief hiatus due to heart surgery in 1971.

Stone's accolades include an Emmy Award in 1968 and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. He passed away from a heart attack in La Jolla, California, leaving behind a legacy celebrated in the Milburn Stone Theatre in northeastern Maryland and his induction into the Western Performers Hall of Fame posthumously in 1981. He is remembered for his significant contributions to the performing arts.
