Takeshi Kitano
Takeshi Kitano (北野 武, Kitano Takeshi), born on January 18, 1947, is a multifaceted Japanese comedian, actor, and filmmaker, popularly recognized in Japan as Beat Takeshi (ビートたけし, Bīto Takeshi). Although he initially gained fame as a comedian and television personality, his international reputation is largely built on his cinematic achievements and acting roles.
Kitano first made a name for himself in the 1970s as part of the comedy duo Two Beat, before establishing a successful solo career that positioned him among Japan's top comedians. His foray into acting began with minor roles, but he soon transitioned into directing with his debut film, Violent Cop, released in 1989. His talent behind the camera was spotlighted with the critically acclaimed Sonatine in 1993. However, it was the film Hana-bi, which won the prestigious Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival in 1997, that solidified his status as a leading director in Japan.
In addition to his film work, Kitano is also celebrated for hosting the popular game show Takeshi's Castle from 1986 to 1990 and for his role in the cult classic Battle Royale, released in 2000. In October 2017, he completed his acclaimed Outrage trilogy with the release of Outrage Coda, further cementing his legacy in the world of cinema.
