Doris Dowling (May 15, 1923 – June 18, 2004) was a prominent American actress known for her versatile performances across film, stage, and television. Born in Detroit, she initially made her mark as a chorus girl on Broadway before relocating to Hollywood, following in the footsteps of her sister, Constance Dowling. Doris gained significant recognition with her role as Gloria, a troubled barfly alongside Ray Milland in the 1945 classic, The Lost Weekend. She further showcased her talent in the film The Blue Dahlia, featuring Alan Ladd and Veronica Lake.

As opportunities in post-war America dwindled, Dowling moved to Italy, where she revitalized her career by starring in critically acclaimed films like Bitter Rice. Her international acclaim continued with her portrayal of Bianca in Orson Welles's European production of Othello in 1952.

Upon returning to the United States, Dowling found success primarily in theater and television, appearing in notable series such as Alfred Hitchcock Presents, Bonanza, Perry Mason, and The Andy Griffith Show. In her later years, she featured in The Incredible Hulk, Kojak, and The Dukes of Hazzard. Her stage work earned her an Outer Critics Circle award in 1973 for her performance in a revival of The Women.

Doris had a colorful personal life, dating the renowned director Billy Wilder and marrying three times, including a notable union with bandleader Artie Shaw, with whom she had a son, Jonathan. She passed away in 2004, leaving behind a rich legacy in the entertainment industry.
