Madeleine Robinson

Madeleine Robinson, originally named Madeleine Svoboda, was a celebrated French actress born on November 5, 1917, near Paris to a French mother and a Czech father. Orphaned at the tender age of 14, she took on the responsibility of caring for herself and her two younger brothers while nurturing her passion for theater. She honed her craft under the tutelage of Charles Dullin, which paved the way for her first significant role in the 1936 production of *Forty Little Mothers*.

During the German Occupation of France, Robinson gained notable recognition through her performances in *Love Story* and *Summer Light*, both released in 1943, and in *The Bellman* in 1945. However, her involvement in theater during this challenging period made it difficult for her to find work in subsequent years. She eventually regained the spotlight with her role in *Une si jolie petite plage* in 1949.

Robinson's talent was acknowledged in 1959 when she received the prestigious Volpi Cup for Best Actress for her performance in *À double tour*. Her exceptional contributions to the performing arts were further honored in 2001 when she was awarded a Molière d'honneur. Madeleine Robinson passed away on August 1, 2004, leaving behind a significant legacy in French cinema.
