Plot
At a remote way station in the French Alps, a bell ringer commits a shocking act by killing a traveling horse trader with a thrown rock and stealing his money. He plans to use the cash to win over the daughter of his only friend, a man with a head injury deemed the village's simpleton. Unbeknownst to him, she is in love with a humble woodsman, who faces pressure to marry the affluent innkeeper's daughter.
