Jessie Ralph, originally named Jessie Ralph Chambers, was born on November 5, 1864, in Gloucester, Massachusetts. A prominent American actress, she became especially acclaimed for her maternal portrayals in classic films. Ralph embarked on her acting journey at the young age of 16, making her debut in 1880. She quickly made her way to Broadway, where she garnered attention from renowned playwright George M. Cohan, who featured her in several of his musicals, showcasing her talent in both comedy and drama.
While she began her film career in Hollywood in 1916, it wasn't until 1933 that she became a permanent presence in the industry, just shy of 70 years old. Fields' formidable mother-in-law in "The Bank Dick," Myrna Loy's haughty aunt Katherine in "After the Thin Man," and Nurse Peggotty in "David Copperfield." Over her 25-year film career, Ralph appeared in a total of 55 movies, with 52 of them filmed between 1933 and 1941.
After retiring from acting in 1941 due to health issues, including the amputation of her leg, Jessie Ralph passed away on May 30, 1944, in her hometown of Gloucester, where she was laid to rest at Mount Pleasant Cemetery.
