Friedrich Hans Ulrich Mühe (June 20, 1953 – July 22, 2007) was a notable German actor recognized for his work in film, television, and theater. He gained significant acclaim for his portrayal of Hauptmann (Captain) Gerd Wiesler in the Oscar-winning film Das Leben der Anderen (The Lives of Others, 2006). His performance earned him the prestigious Gold award for Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role at the Deutscher Filmpreis, Germany's top film awards, as well as the Best Actor honor at the 2006 European Film Awards.

Interestingly, aspects of Mühe's own life mirrored the narrative of the film. He reportedly found evidence in a Stasi file indicating that he had been surveilled by his second wife, Jenny Gröllmann, a claim she disputed. This led to a contentious and widely publicized legal battle, resulting in Gröllmann securing an injunction that prohibited Mühe from repeating his allegations in print.

Before embarking on his acting career, Mühe worked as a construction laborer and a border guard at the Berlin Wall. He transitioned into acting in the late 1970s, gaining fame at the Deutsches Theater in East Berlin throughout the 1980s. An outspoken critic of Communist governance, Mühe made a significant political statement during the Alexanderplatz demonstration on November 4, 1989, shortly before the Berlin Wall's collapse. Following the reunification of Germany, he continued to have a prolific career in film, television, and theater, most notably as Dr. Robert Kolmaar in the long-running crime series Der letzte Zeuge (The Last Witness, 1998–2007).
