Spike Lee
Shelton Jackson "Spike" Lee, born on March 20, 1957, in Atlanta, Georgia, is an acclaimed American director and actor. Early in his life, he relocated from the pre-civil rights South to Brooklyn, New York. His father, a jazz musician, and his mother, an educator, influenced his creative upbringing, with his mother nicknaming him Spike for his tough disposition.
Lee pursued his education at Morehouse College in Atlanta and honed his filmmaking abilities at Clark Atlanta University. After completing his studies, he enrolled in the graduate film program at Tisch School of the Arts. His early work included a provocative short film titled The Answer (1980), which reinterpreted D.W. Griffith's controversial work, The Birth of a Nation (1915). He followed this with a 45-minute film, Joe's Bed-Stuy Barbershop: We Cut Heads (1983), which earned him a student Academy Award. His first feature-length film, She's Gotta Have It (1986), a comedy exploring sexual dynamics, was produced on a $175,000 budget and grossed $7 million.
Lee's influential filmography continued with School Daze (1988), which critiqued the dynamics within historically Black colleges, and his pivotal work, Do the Right Thing (1989), which examined race relations in Brooklyn and earned an Oscar nomination for actor Danny Aiello. His later projects include the jazz biopic Mo' Better Blues (1990), Jungle Fever (1991), and the acclaimed Malcolm X (1992), featuring Denzel Washington. Lee has also directed various notable films, including Crooklyn (1994) and Bamboozled (2000), which tackled societal perceptions of African Americans. A passionate New York Knicks supporter, Spike Lee resides in New York with his wife, Tonya Lewis Lee, and their two children.
