Edythe Chapman, born on October 8, 1863, in Rochester, New York, was a prominent American actress known for her impactful roles on stage and in silent films. Her career took off in 1898 when she appeared in the production of Charity Ball in New York City. By 1907, she graced the stage of the Shubert Theater in Brooklyn with her performance in The Light Eternal.

In the 1920s, Edythe earned the affectionate title of "Hollywood's Mother" due to her frequent portrayal of maternal figures in numerous silent films. Notable performances include her role as Ma Jones in the 1925 film adaptation of Lightnin', which starred the legendary Will Rogers, and her part as Grandmother Janeway in the 1927 film Man Crazy.

Edythe moved to Hollywood around 1909 alongside her husband, James Neill, an accomplished actor in his own right whom she married in 1897 after meeting him while working in his stock company in Cincinnati, Ohio. Together, they collaborated with esteemed directors like Cecil B. DeMille and starred in various silent films, including The Ten Commandments (1923) and Manslaughter (1922). James Neill passed away in 1931.

Edythe's final film appearance was in Double Crossroads in 1930, following her significant role in Navy Blues the previous year. She passed away on October 15, 1948, in Glendale, California, after a brief illness.
