Leonid Kinskey
Leonid Kinskey (April 18, 1903 – September 8, 1998) was a celebrated actor of Russian descent whose career spanned several decades in both film and television. He gained widespread recognition for his memorable portrayal of Sascha in the iconic 1942 film Casablanca.
Born in St. Petersburg, Russia, Kinskey fled his homeland amid the turmoil of the Russian Revolution. After performing on stage across Europe and South America, he made his way to New York City in 1921. Kinskey's journey in the entertainment industry began with his participation in the touring production of Al Jolson's musical Wonder Bar, leading to his film debut in the 1932 classic Trouble in Paradise. His distinctive accent and charming looks enabled him to secure a variety of supporting roles in films such as Duck Soup and Nothing Sacred, and he remained active on television until the 1960s. His connection to star Humphrey Bogart is said to have played a role in landing the part of Sascha in Casablanca.
Kinskey also appeared in the pilot episode of Hogan's Heroes but opted out of a regular role, feeling that the show's treatment of serious themes was too lighthearted. Throughout his life, he was married three times, including to actress Iphigenie Castiglioni until her passing in 1963, and later to Tina York until his death. Kinskey passed away from stroke-related complications at the age of 95 in Fountain Hills, Arizona.
