William Gaunt
William Charles Anthony Gaunt, born on April 3, 1937, in Pudsey, Yorkshire, is a distinguished English actor known for his versatile roles across television and stage. He comes from a legal background, with his father being a lawyer, and pursued his education at Giggleswick School, Baylor University in Texas, and the prestigious Royal Academy of Dramatic Art.
Gaunt's acting career began in repertory theatre, where he honed his craft for three years in various locations including Worthing, Bath, Salisbury, and Cheltenham. He also spent time in the United States, directing theatrical productions upon his return, further enriched by a brief military service.
In the 1960s, Gaunt made his mark with minor roles in notable series like Z-Cars and The Avengers, as well as in the Edgar Wallace Mysteries films, including The Sinister Man (1961) and Solo for Sparrow (1962). His breakout role came in 1968 as the super-agent Richard Barrett in the sci-fi series The Champions. He also appeared regularly in Sergeant Cork, showcasing his range as an actor.
From 1983 to 1987, Gaunt portrayed the beleaguered father Arthur Crabtree in the sitcom No Place Like Home. His extensive television credits include guest roles in shows such as Juliet Bravo and Doctor Who, where he appeared in the episode "Revelation of the Daleks." More recently, he starred in the sitcom Next of Kin alongside Penelope Keith from 1995 to 1997, and appeared in the Globe Theatre's production of Henry IV, Part 1 in 2010. Gaunt's enduring presence in the industry continues with roles in ITV dramas like Without You and Midsomer Murders, and he played Judge St John Redmond in EastEnders in 2015.
