Teruyuki Kagawa

Teruyuki Kagawa

30 titles Acting Dec 07, 1965 Tokyo, Japan

Teruyuki Kagawa (香川 照之, Kagawa Teruyuki), born on December 7, 1965, is a prominent Japanese actor, kabuki performer, and boxing commentator. He hails from a family deeply rooted in the performing arts; his father is the renowned kabuki actor Ichikawa Ennosuke III, while his mother, Yuko Hama, is a celebrated film actress. His grandmother, Sanae Takasugi, also made her mark in cinema.

Kagawa's early life took a significant turn when his parents divorced in 1968, leading to his mother gaining custody. This separation meant that he had minimal contact with his father, and his mother discouraged him from pursuing kabuki, leading him to believe it was something to avoid. Despite this, Kagawa sought to reconnect with his father throughout his youth. At 20, he attended one of Ennosuke's performances, identifying himself as his son, but tragically, his father denied any relationship.

Pursuing a different path, Kagawa graduated with a degree in social psychology from the University of Tokyo before embarking on a career in film. His talent has been recognized with two nominations for Best Supporting Actor at the Japanese Academy Awards for his roles in "Warau Iemon" and "Kita no zeronen," culminating in a win for Best Supporting Actor at the 33rd Japan Academy Prize for his performance in "Mt. Tsurugidake."
