Dora May Bryan OBE was a celebrated English actress known for her work across stage, film, and television. Born Dora May Broadbent, she embarked on her performing career as a child in pantomime. During World War II, she contributed to the morale of British troops by joining the Entertainments National Service Association (ENSA) in Italy.

Bryan established herself as a multifaceted stage performer, adept in a wide range of genres from drama and comedy to musicals. By the late 1940s, she transitioned into film, and in 1968, she starred in her own television series, "According to Dora." At one point, she became one of the highest-paid actresses in Britain.

Her stage career continued robustly until the mid-1990s, though she remained active in film and television until 2005, when she had to retire due to memory challenges. In 1987, she published her autobiography, "According To Dora," offering insights into her remarkable life.

In recognition of her contributions to the arts, she was honored with an OBE in 1996, the same year she received the Laurence Olivier Award for her performance in Harold Pinter's "The Birthday Party" in the West End.

Bryan was married to cricketer Bill Lawton from 1954 until his passing in 2008. She spent her final years in a nursing home in Hove, near Brighton, where she passed away in 2014.
