Bess Flowers
Bess Flowers (November 23, 1898 – July 28, 1984) was an iconic American actress renowned for her extraordinary contributions to Hollywood, often hailed as "The Queen of the Hollywood Extras." Over her remarkable 41-year career, she appeared in more than 700 films, making her one of the most prolific actresses in cinematic history.
Born in Sherman, Texas, Flowers made her film debut in 1923, quickly establishing herself in the industry with three films in her first year. As her career progressed, she became a staple in countless productions, frequently in uncredited, non-speaking roles.
By the 1930s, Flowers was a sought-after presence in the film industry, collaborating with legendary directors like Alfred Hitchcock and John Ford, and sharing the screen with comedy greats such as Charley Chase, the Three Stooges, Leon Errol, Edgar Kennedy, and Laurel and Hardy.
Notably, Flowers appeared in five films that received the Academy Award for Best Picture: *It Happened One Night*, *You Can't Take It with You*, *All About Eve*, *The Greatest Show on Earth*, and *Around the World in Eighty Days*. In total, she was featured in twenty-three Best Picture nominees, a record that highlights her significant impact on cinema. Her final film appearance came in 1964’s *Good Neighbor Sam*.
Beyond her film work, Flowers was active in television, making memorable appearances in popular series such as *I Love Lucy*. Additionally, in 1945, she co-founded the Screen Extras Guild, serving as one of its early vice-presidents and recording secretaries, contributing to the welfare of her fellow performers.
