Ian Wolfe
Ian Wolfe (November 4, 1896 – January 23, 1992) was a prominent American actor whose film career spanned from 1934 to 1990. Prior to his film work, he honed his craft in the theatre. Throughout his career, Wolfe established himself as a character actor, amassing a remarkable repertoire of over 270 films. He was married to Elizabeth, and together they raised two daughters.
A veteran of World War I, Wolfe served as a medical sergeant in the National Army of the United States, with the service number 2371377. Although he was American by birth, he was frequently cast in roles as Englishmen, thanks to his refined diction that mimicked an upper-class British accent—a skill he developed during his theatrical training. His early onset of a receding hairline and distinctive facial features allowed him to portray older characters long before he aged into them. Wolfe excelled in roles as soft-spoken intellectuals, often featuring as attorneys, judges, butlers, ministers, professors, and doctors.
One of his most notable performances was in the 1946 film Bedlam, where he portrayed a scientist trapped in an asylum. In addition to his acting, Wolfe authored and self-published two poetry collections: *Forty-Four Scribbles and a Prayer: Lyrics and Ballads* and *Sixty Ballads and Lyrics In Search of Music*.
Sci-fi enthusiasts may remember Wolfe for his appearances in the original *Star Trek* series, where he played Septimus in "Bread and Circuses" (1968) and Mr. Atoz in "All Our Yesterdays" (1969). He also portrayed the wizard Traquil in the cult classic *Wizards and Warriors*. In the early 1980s, he had a notable recurring role as Hirsch, the wry butler on *WKRP in Cincinnati*. Wolfe continued to act until the final years of his life, passing away
