Carl Jaffe
Carl Jaffe (21 March 1902 – 12 April 1974) was a distinguished German actor whose career spanned several decades and countries. He began his theatrical training in Hamburg, Kassel, and Wiesbaden, ultimately moving to Berlin where he gained significant recognition.
In 1933, Jaffe adopted the stage name Frank Alwar, but as the political climate for Jews in Germany worsened in 1936, he made the pivotal choice to relocate to the United Kingdom. This decision led to a fruitful career in British cinema and television, where he appeared in over 50 films and numerous TV shows.
Throughout his time in the UK, Jaffe was frequently cast in roles portraying German or Central European characters, often within narratives centered around war, crime, or espionage. His filmography includes notable works such as *The Lion Has Wings*, *The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp*, *Two Thousand Women*, *Operation Amsterdam*, and *The Roman Spring of Mrs. Stone*. His contributions to television were also significant, with appearances in popular series such as *Danger Man*, *Dad's Army*, and *Oh, Brother!*.
Jaffe's artistic legacy remains marked by his ability to convey complex characters, and his work continues to be recognized for its impact on both film and television during a tumultuous period in history.
