Hattie's career took off in the 1940s, where she found fame through her radio performances, notably with Tommy Handley on the popular show ITMA, and later alongside Tony Hancock in Hancock's Half Hour.

Her iconic presence on screen was solidified with her participation in fourteen Carry On films from 1958 to 1974, where she frequently portrayed the role of a no-nonsense hospital matron.
