Richard Thomas
Richard Earl Thomas, born on June 13, 1951, in Manhattan, is a celebrated American actor, best known for his role as the aspiring writer John-Boy Walton in the beloved CBS drama series, The Waltons. Throughout his illustrious career, Thomas garnered significant acclaim, winning an Emmy Award and earning nominations for another Emmy Award as well as two Golden Globe Awards.
Growing up in a family of performers, Thomas was the son of Barbara (née Fallis) and Richard S. Thomas, both of whom were dancers with the New York City Ballet and co-founders of the New York School of Ballet. He received his early education at The Allen Stevenson School and the McBurney School in Manhattan.
Thomas's theatrical journey began at the tender age of seven when he made his Broadway debut in the play Sunrise at Campobello (1958), portraying John Roosevelt, the son of future U.S. President Franklin Delano Roosevelt. This early start marked the beginning of a successful career that would ultimately establish him as a prominent figure in the entertainment industry, with a legacy that continues to resonate with audiences today.
