Plot

On Christmas Eve in the early 1930s at Walton's Mountain, the family is busy getting ready for the holiday while anxiously anticipating Pa's return from his job in the city, located 50 miles away. As he fails to arrive on time, Ma and the grandparents hear a troubling news report about a bus accident. Meanwhile, the eldest son, John-Boy, takes on the responsibility of helping his grandfather cut down a Christmas tree. Concerned about their father, he decides to venture out to search for him.
