Dorothy Sebastian (April 26, 1903 – April 8, 1957) was a distinguished American actress known for her work in both film and theater. Born in Birmingham, Alabama, she harbored ambitions of becoming a dancer and actress from a young age, but faced familial disapproval. At just 15, she left home for New York City, where she relentlessly pursued her dreams despite numerous rejections and the challenge of her pronounced Southern accent.

Sebastian's breakthrough came when she caught the eye of Robert Kane in Hollywood, leading to a film test at United Studios. Her career took off as she starred in the musical revue "George White's Scandals," and she became a prominent figure in MGM's romantic dramas, sharing the screen with stars like Joan Crawford and Anita Page in films such as "Our Dancing Daughters" (1928) and "Our Blushing Brides" (1930). In 1929, she appeared alongside her then-partner, Buster Keaton, in "Spite Marriage."

In the mid-1930s, she stepped back from the limelight after marrying actor William Boyd, best known as Hopalong Cassidy. Their marriage ended in divorce in 1936, prompting her return to minor acting roles, with her final appearance in the 1948 film "The Miracle of the Bells."

Sebastian's later years included a marriage to businessman Harold Shapiro, which lasted until her passing. She succumbed to cancer on April 8, 1957, at the Motion Picture & Television Country House in California and is interred at Holy Cross Cemetery in Culver City. Her contributions to cinema are honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
